Nick Thorburn, (formerly Nick Diamonds), is composed of peculiar fascinations– whales, death, swans, and mythical creatures recur throughout his body of work. Current front man of Islands, member of Th’ Corn Gang, and founder of the now-defunct Unicorns, Thorburn has a sweet recognizable voice that seems as much to flirt with pop-bliss as to reject it. He whispers sweet-nothings about getting eaten by wolves. His new project, Human Highway, which drops a record like a coconut from the tree this August, is acoustic summer rapture. Or at least that’s what I’m getting from the two songs they’ve released. Fellow Canuck Jim Guthrie seems to mellow Thorburn out, and the result is a song you’d hate if it weren’t so gosh-darn sweet. It’s the lightness that makes it– so please, I implore you: peek above the grass line, watch little flies circle and tag, and listen to “The Sound”.
